The green bit

Organic

Whenever possible, I use organic oils. Organic essential oils. Organic olive oil. Sometimes however, it is not possible to find an organic equivalent. Or - I will admit openly here - the cost becomes prohibitive since the cost of essential oils is so high.

Natural Colourings

My soaps do not contain any artificial or chemical colourings. Only natural ones (spices like cinammon or turmeric). With no added colourings, soaps take on the colour of their principal ingredient; oils. Olive oil makes a tan-green soap. Rapeseed oil and sunflower oil are lighter. Coconut oil is white. Beeswax is a browny-orange colour. So my soaps are typically (naturally!) shades of cream, yellow, green or brown.

Green Credentials

  • No plastic packaging! Only natural raffia, sellophane bags (biodegradable) and recyclable bags and boxes.
  • I don’t use palm oil (an industry which is devastating whole tracts of land in Indonesia and Malaysia).
  • I’m making my own tallow (this is a key fat in soapmaking).
  • Ive planted my own aromatic herb garden (see left) in order to source natural additives such as lavender, chamomile and roses.
  • I use local suppliers for most ingredients. I don’t have a car; I either cycle to my suppliers or use internet delivery.
